Something About Mary

I saw this at the discount movies last night. Critics generally seemed to hate this movie while everyone I talked to loved it. There were probably four rolling on the floor funny scenes. Most of the rest moved along at a typical stupid comedy pace. Some of the jokes don't work and many of the ancillary characters are simply not believable. It won't win any oscars but this is still a movie with some very funny slapstick comedy.

One problem I have with it is the new level of crudeness attained here. Though I really didn't think the visual semen joke was that funny, look for it to be copied over and over again. Look for more jokes at the expense of the disabled. People who make bad comedies will think the secret of Mary is the way it went over the top and will copy that aspect while completely forgetting that what it takes is good acting performances and a great sense for what is really funny.

I give this one a B-.
