The Matrix 1999

Maybe the coolest sci-fi movie that will come out this year. Some neat special effects and scenery wrapped up in one of the most imaginative premises for a movie ever. The underlying principles of the movie are so complex and yet so thoroughly explored that you feel a need to see it over again so you can watch the movie rather than try to figure out what’s happening. Keanu Reeves plays his role well and, as someone told me, it helps that Keanu Reeves is so clueless, because the guy in the movie needs to be clueless. So it’s a good fit. There are some great fight scenes that will influence martial arts films for years to come. I wish they had stuck with the fist fights because the shootouts were just plain silly: lots of guns, bullets, breaking glass, and yet the hero never gets touched. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way.

This is great eye candy, but it will make you engage your imagination as well. A scene with a detective is one of the most enjoyable bit pieces you will see. If you like sci-fi, this is for you. If not, you’ll probably just see this as a confusing, gross, violent movie with no real payoff.
