Y Tu Mama Tambien 2002

B

This is a movie about teenage sexuality of two boys in Mexico who have just graduated high school. All teenagers have raging hormones but these two take it to the next level and the movie rarely isn’t dealing with sex, masturbation, or both (with lots of male nudity). The two boys, in one of those situations that only happens in movies, wind up going on a road trip with the hot wife of one of their cousins. Though she comes off as a pretty normal young wife, she has chosen this trip to teach these boys about sex and they are eager to learn.

And essentially that is the whole movie. It definitely explores ground that not many movies would cover and, as you get to know the characters, they become likable enough. I think the reason why critics hailed this as being such a great movie was the frank way it dealt with sex, the good writing, and the bittersweet ending. Like with most foreign language films I have a hard time telling if the acting is any good. I’m so busy reading subtitles I don’t even always know who is saying what and I was most of the way through the movie before I could tell the two boys apart. There is a lot of funny dialog as the three characters bounce off each other, trading insults and insights. And while I didn’t think the whole setup was that realistic or the extreme horniness of these two boys, there is some truth there. I don’t think this is a great movie, but it is a good one as long as you’re open-minded about sex and drug use. I’ll give it a B.
