Happy Feet 2006

I was hoping for something a little better than the rest of the crop of recent ho-hum animated movies. Unfortunately, Happy Feet can’t even reach average. They throw together all of the ideas of other animated movies: singing, dancing, friendship, growing up, a misfit loner struggling to find his purpose in life, etc. But it just doesn’t work. Part of the problem is they didn’t make the penguins very expressive or unique. The voice actors run amok with accents that don’t seem like penguins: scottish, latino, and Robin Williams’ black soul man penguin. The penguins are terrorized by skuas, monk seals, and killer whales. Towards the end the movie tilts towards One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest before going into an environmental conservation message. I know it is a movie for kids, but this movie is all over the map and none of it seems to fit together very well. C-.
