Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I 2010

B-

The last book of the Harry Potter series was so long that they decided to split the book into two movies. It still seems like they are rushing around from point to point and not filling us in on what is going on. At the same time, with the way the books are written, there isn’t a lot to fill you in on. Stuff just happens and then gets explained. The entire series has been this way. In this episode they are looking for a sword and then one day, the sword just shows up in a lake. No reason, no real detective work on their part, just suddenly there it is. I’m sure this will be explained afterwards, but what’s the point?

It is easy to lose patience with this movie since it is just Part 1 of a 2-part movie. Unfortunately this movie is almost entirely lacking the adult cast that really gives the movies their spark. Instead it relies on the students who just aren’t as good, nor do they have the material they need to really shine. Events drive their story more than the characters themselves. Important characters die for no real reason (just as in the book) other than to reflect an imaginary scoreboard that tells us the good guys are losing.

This movie consists mostly of Harry, Hermione, and Ron looking for horcruxes. They don’t know what the horcruxes are or how to find them and therefore it is hard getting too excited about them. Destroying one of them doesn’t seem to have any effect, so it is hard to see the point. As Part 1, this is watching a movie that has no ending. The ending is just the middle. They have certainly made this a darker, sadder movie than in the past, but that doesn’t make it any better. This movie only gets a B- and that is really only because I care about the series and still like the characters.
