The Kids Are All Right 2010

B-

I don’t know quite what I was expecting from this movie. I knew going in that it was about a lesbian couple (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) with two teenaged kids who contact their anonymous sperm donor father (Mark Ruffalo). It is a strong cast with maybe an interesting twist with the married lesbian couple. I don’t want to give away more than that because there are a few twists and turns that make this darker in some ways than I expected and at the same time not as overly dramatic as it could have been. It’s a very adult movie with a heavy dose of sex, but honestly not that original. Make the lesbians a hetero married couple and this movie would be completely generic. It’s still kind of fun to watch and women will probably like the soap opera aspects, but the three adult characters aren’t all that likable and the situations seem a little unlikely at best. There are some cute fun moments and a few very good scenes that distinguish the movie and probably earned some of the critical raves it got.
