Bridesmaids 2011

A-

I was able to see this movie when I got a free weekend of HBO. It was one I heard a lot of good things about and wanted to see, but I still had low expectations since it is definitely a chick flick. It shouldn’t be remarkable that an all-woman cast could make a great comedy, but it still just doesn’t happen very often. There are guys in the movie, it just doesn’t really center around them. There are some great characters, not because they are necessarily realistic, but because they are just so off-the-wall while still seeming possible.

Kristen Wiig is the main star who has been chosen as Maid of Honor for her friend’s upcoming wedding. Wiig’s character has a lot of issues in the movie, so she isn’t someone you feel sorry for, but you do want things to turn out all right. The groom’s sister, played by Melissa McCarthy, is just fantastic, having earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress through sheer effort, determination, and daring. None of these oddballs really work without great performances, but they are there without really hamming it up, and the result is a very funny, if horribly obscene, movie. Most movies like this get bogged down in their own plot, but this movie wisely focuses on the characters the whole way through. There are slow spots and not everything works, but there is so much going on here, that not all of it has to work. And while it is still a chick flick, there is a lot of physical humor that any guy would still enjoy.
