Flight 2012

B-

I heard about this movie when it was still shooting in Atlanta. One day they were filming at my building and I heard it was for a Denzel Washington movie called Flight. I heard some good things (not great things) about the movie when it was released, with Denzel getting a nomination for Best Actor, and another nomination for Best Original Screenplay. I think it is a good premise for a movie, which is maybe how it garnered the writing nomination, and Denzel is good as always. But the movie fell a little flat for me. It is pretty much just another movie about an alcoholic. Denzel’s character just isn’t that easy to like as we see him throwing his life away on alcohol after miraculously landing a stricken airliner with the loss of only six lives. But because he was drunk at the time, he will be facing manslaughter charges. That’s pretty much the whole movie. There are some other characters and a twist or two, but this is more like an independent movie that focuses on characters than a big budget movie. If it was a tiny movie, filmed on a shoestring, maybe it would seem like a bigger accomplishment. As it is, it is not a bad movie, certainly worth watching, but not as good as I had hoped. B-
