Spy 2015

B+

Good comedy shouldn’t seem that hard, and Spy is like that. They take an easy to mock genre, the spy movie, add A-listers like Jude Law and Jason Statham practicing spycraft in tuxedos, then throw Melissa McCarthy into the mix to cause complete chaos. The spy story here isn’t that horrible with a lot of bad guys to keep you guessing who is doing what, plus there are a lot of legitimately good stunts and action scenes, but they also keep the jokes coming, and I think without a single fat joke at McCarthy’s expense. Still there are a lot of other jokes at everyone’s expense, as Law and Statham play dimmer versions of the typical James Bond characters they are portraying. Some of it is just kind of silly and feels a little like a gag reel, but for the most part the humor is pretty well crafted. This is a fun movie to watch, though it has some crude parts and plenty of bad language.
