Arrival 2016

B+

I heard good things about this movie with some critics calling it an intellectual movie about alien contact. I don’t t hink I even saw previews of it and I assure you that the less you know about the movie going in, the more you may like it (though some people, probably not intellectuals, have said it is boring). Amy Adams plays a linguist and Jeremy Renner plays a physicist who are picked by the military to try to communicate with some very non-communicative aliens. I don’t want to go any further than that with the description. The movie keeps you guessing as the scientists and audience try to figure things out. It is a little like the climactic scene from Close Encounters stretched out to a movie, and probably similar to movies like Contact and The Abyss. If you like those movies, you will like this one. I don’t know that the movie breaks a lot of new ground, but there are some interesting twists and turns along the way. The entire movie centers around Amy Adams’ character and she does a good job with such a meaty role. I enjoyed watching it, but agree it is a little slow, and a little cerebral. Maybe watching at home it would be easy to be distracted, but in the theater it probably helps to just stay with it and watch.
