Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping 2016

B+

This movie seemed pretty interesting, featuring Andy Samberg as a pop star whose career has hit a peak and is now crashing and burning. It is also getting pretty good reviews for a movie that has the potential to be very, very bad. Samberg plays the former leader of the pop/rap group Style Boyz and, as Conner4Real, is now a solo act, still incredibly popular despite never being very good. The songs are mostly pretty bad, but they are funny, poking fun at pop music and Conner in particular. There are tons of cameos from all kinds of people, including a lot of rappers and musicians that I didn’t recognize, but it is all shot in a documentary style where they talk about the major influence the Style Boyz had on them. Everything is mostly just silly excess rather than trying to put pop music on trial or get involved in skewering criticism, though Justin Bieber is an obvious target. In that sense, it is a little like a long Andy Samberg SNL sketch or digital video, but it doesn’t sag too much given the wealth of material he can draw from. Be warned, that this movie deserves its R rating, with tons of f bombs, and male and female nudity, including more of Andy Samberg than anyone should ever see. Most of the jokes work which makes this a pretty good comedy.
