Alien: Covenant 2017

Despite the spaceships and androids, Alien:Covenant is a dressed up horror movie, kind of like a Friday the 13th episode at this point, where we have seen it all before and it is just freshened up with some new faces and a few morsels as clues to the overall mystery. While this movie looks good and is entertaining, it is severely hampered by its own mythology and they aren’t going to do anything at this point to jeopardize the franchise. So the cast all do some of the dumbest possible things, including more than once going by themselves to go look for a missing crewmate. And while they tell each other to keep their comm links open, they never tell each other much about what is happening. When smart characters do dumb things, that’s just bad writing. Even a big twist at the end is so obvious that you can’t believe nobody in the movie even questions it. While I liked the original Alien by Ridley Scott and its sequel Aliens by James Cameron, this Ridley Scott episode, while lively, is pretty disappointing, despite two very good performances by Michael Fassbender along with some other familiar faces.
