The Bourne Identity 2002

B

While there is nothing great about this movie, it does a good job all the time and the end result is an enjoyable action thriller. The plot centers around a guy with amnesia. Along with the “evil twin” amnesia accounts for about half of Gilligan’s Island’s episodes. Fortunately this is such a worn out plot contrivance that it is easy enough to accept. Matt Damon is good playing a guy who remembers all of his training but not his own identity, though if this happened to most people I’m thinking they’d go straight to the police. The underlying menace of knowing there are always a bunch of people out to kill him, plus the big mystery of why they want to keeps you interested throughout. And there are plenty of fights, cat and mouse, and car chases to keep it interesting. I like that there aren’t a lot of big explosions and ridiculous gunfights used as expensive substitutes for a plot. For once an action hero keeps turning away from guns. There are still plenty of shoot-ups, but nothing outrageous.

Entertaining, but keep your expectations low. I give it a B.
