Collateral 2004
This is a very enjoyable movie, though it really doesn’t have a complex plot or anything spectacular going for it. Jamie Foxx was very good, able to do the romantic scene at the beginning with Jada Pinckett Smith as well as the scared victim. Also his transformation at the mexican cowboy bar was great. I’m surprised they considered this a supporting performance. Really the whole movie is about him and what makes the movie good is his ability to make the audience identify with him.
Tom Cruise is also good, but even with the white hair he is still Tom Cruise, so I wonder why they bothered. Also they seem to have shot the movie wider than they showed it, so everything looks too skinny. I guess that’s what the director was after, but I thought it was kind of a distraction, especially on home video where I’m always struggling with getting the right aspect ratio anyway.
Like The Bourne Supremacy, Collateral doesn’t break a lot of new ground but is very well made and enjoyable. I’ll give it a B+.
