I, Robot 2004
This is a movie I had meant to watch when it came out, then meant to watch when it came out on DVD, and so on. I enjoyed reading Isaac Asimov’s books about robots as a kid and as a grownup, so I was looking forward to something cerebral and futuristic. The books take on all kinds of interesting issues that arise when humans create beings that are smarter than themselves but also forced to be subservient. Of course, Hollywood isn’t going to go all that cerebral on us and instead tries to make this as much an action movie as anything. Although the robots have to be CGI (though overlayed on real actors in green suits), the action is pretty good. I wasn’t crazy about how the movie resolved itself, but I thought it touched on some of what made the Asimov books so enjoyable. There was a corporate conspiracy angle that is kind of tired and doesn’t provide the same level of excitement as a foreign enemy or arch villain. Had the movie done better, there would probably be sequels, because there is certainly enough material by Asimov to make several movies. This was a good movie that keeps you guessing and the action keeps you on the edge of your seat. B+
