Welcome to Mooseport 2004
I just panned one old movie, so I’ll go ahead and pan this one as well which I saw on a plane on the way to Phoenix.
The point of this movie was to provide Ray Romano with something to do. But while I like Everybody Loves Raymond, this movie fell very flat. Similar to Bruce Almighty we have an insensitive, commitment-shy, middle-aged guy and a very cute girlfriend (this time Maura Tierney from ER and Newsradio) who sticks by him until shortly after the movie starts. Then throw in some more very good actors like Gene Hackman and Marcia Gay Harden. But once again, they forgot to write anything funny. The story is nice, but it can’t support the movie without a lot of laughs and they just aren’t there. There are moments when you think things ought to be funny but they just aren’t (maybe because I was on a plane? There is a cause and effect question here of whether airlines show bad movies or if movies just seem worse on a plane).
Anyway, while the movie wasn’t painfully bad, it was obviously not a good movie. It had a few mildly comical moments and was a decent way of passing the time crossing Texas, but don’t go out of your way. I’ll give a C.
