Revenge of the Sith 2005
I caught this Sunday night and there was no line and the theater wasn’t quite full. I was impressed with the entire movie. In fact, as it was starting and they were giving you the opening summary I was thinking “What exactly happened in the last movie?” And what this one shows you is how very empty the first two movies really were. This one has to rush from point to point with hardly any room for side stories. The acting was still kind of weak, but I thought there was a decent balance of fight scenes, action, space stuff, etc. This was R2D2’s best performance. Samuel Jackson was better this time and Yoda wasn’t even half bad. Hayden Christiansen was still weak and somehow they found a way to make Natalie Portman look less than spectacular with too much makeup and the cinnamon bun hairstyle.
The fight scenes are good, but at this point everyone fighting is so incredibly fast and proficient that it makes it look overchoreographed. The light sabers looked better than in the second movie though. And I loved the battle with General Grievous which took the whole thing to a comic overstatement. I also like the scenes of the battle cruisers in combat taking broadsides at each other. While it doesn’t make a lot of sense for everyone to go sliding across the floor when a spaceship takes a nosedive, I thought it was a nice homage to Horatio Hornblower type movies.
I was very happy with this conclusion to the series and will give the movie an A.
