The Bank Job 2008
This is an interesting take on a heist movie. They took an actual bank robbery from 70’s London and then added on a bunch of speculative stuff involving secret police, gangsters, and the royal family. I liked how everything was resolved, but the movie was kind of slow to get started and didn’t really hit its stride until the robbery had already taken place. Jason Statham is good in his role as a working guy trying to go straight with one big robbery, convincing himself that maybe the reason it will work is that nobody doing it has any experience with any of this. Whatever his criminal past, he certainly has good instincts and will need them if he is going to survive.
The DVD is good with a feature on the actual robbery and another on making the movie. I wasn’t as overwhelmed as some critics, but this is a movie that is certainly worth watching and has a tangled web of subplots that are fun to watch too. I’ll give this a B+ despite the slow pace at the beginning and the fact that it never really keeps you on the edge of your seat so much as keeps you wondering how everything will end up.
