Goodbye Solo 2008

B+

This movie got some good reviews in 2008 and showed up on a few Top 10 lists. It is an easily-overlooked indie movie that most people probably never heard of. It is about an African cab driver in Winston-Salem who befriends a cranky old man when he fears the guy is going to commit suicide. Solo is the name of the Senegalese cab driver and he pretty much carries the movie, providing a lot of energy and doing most of the talking. He’s a fun character to watch even though he has a host of his own problems. The old man is more of a mystery and his acting is done more through his craggy face than through his line reading. A character study, it is a typical low budget indie movie. If you like that kind of thing, this movie is pretty good. If you are bored by movies where nothing much happens, it will be painful to watch. I hoped for a little more of a story than what I got, but it was enjoyable.
