Midnight in Paris 2011
I have never been that impressed with Woody Allen’s work, but I do think that he sometimes makes very good movies. Midnight in Paris is one of his lighter efforts, but I like the element of time travel, particularly going back and meeting some literary and artistic giants of 1920’s Paris. Woody Allen is played by Owen Wilson in this movie and it is a pretty good fit, with Wilson able to convey the excitement over this new part of his life (going back in time) and the angst over his present (doubts about his engagement and career). While there is some drama, it is more of a comedy, though a quietly funny comedy, with romance thrown in as Wilson’s character falls for a woman from the past. This isn’t a great movie, but it is hard to find fault with it either, other than sometimes being too sweet or too much of an advertisement for Paris tourism. Even that isn’t a bad change of pace from Woody’s usual target of New York City.
