Thor 2011

B+

I didn’t have much interest in seeing Thor when it first came out. I remembered seeing Thor comics as a kid and they just were not interesting. This movie didn’t get great reviews either. Still, I wound up seeing all of the Marvel movies except Thor and Thor: The Dark World and now a new Thor movie is coming out featuring Natalie Portman’s character from this movie. Plus I enjoyed watching the Loki series. I think with all of that, I was able to enjoy this movie a little more than I probably would have at the time. What was exposition and frustrating hints at the time just fills in a few gaps now. Plus Chris Hemsworth’s Thor character really came into his own in Thor: Ragnarok, which I did see at the theaters and liked. It is good to see the roots of that character here, even if he isn’t fully developed.

Enough about me, this is a fun movie, shorter than most Marvel movies and, as part of Phase I, not burdened with too much of the Marvel story arc or other characters (though a couple show up). Natalie Portman looks great as Thor’s mortal love interest and does a great job of being smitten with Thor as well as dealing with the space magic concepts. It is nice having some rom-com lightness in a Marvel movie. The bad guys are kind of vague and, of course, Loki is a pretty good foil. The movie also looked good, in 4k and HDR, with a lot of color. Asgard has some great scenery. Still, with the short running time and a rushed romance, the main plot seems a little too straightforward and Thor’s hammer isn’t that exciting of a superpower. His sidekicks are a little generic too. So it still misses an A, but I liked it well enough to give it a B+, which is higher than I expected.
