The Pirates! Band of Misfits 2012

A-

Somehow I completely missed this movie when it came out. I recently was given a digital copy of it, found out more about it, and watched it right away. It is by Sony and Aardman Animations, famous for Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and others. The movie got good reviews, but did not enjoy much of a take at the box office. While the general story of a comic pirate has been done, this movie, based on a children's book, has a lot of quirky humor and rich details that give adults a lot to like. First and foremost is a very wry voice performance from Hugh Grant as the main character, Pirate Captain. Set in 1837, there are some nice steampunk design elements. While it is not a laugh riot, there are some great moments and gags, plus so much going on that repeat viewings should be rewarding. There are some good extras that talk about the pirate ship model and character animation.
