Pitch Perfect 2012

C+

I am not the target audience for this movie, but it got surprisingly good reviews and spawned two sequels. Also I was given a digital copy of it along with Pitch Perfect 2, plus they redeemed in 4k (I doubt 4k makes any difference with this movie).

The movie isn’t great, centering on collegiate a capella group competitions. The music numbers are the highlight of the movie, even though I am not familiar with most of the newer music. The characters are all caricatures, except Anna Kendrick as the main one. She is a musically inclined (she does music remixes and wants to be a music producer) freshman with a great voice but not many friends who makes a deal with her father to join at least one on campus organization. The head of the female a capella group is an uptight control freak who refuses to do anything but try to perfect one number and the movie milks this for the entire movie. Making even less sense, one of the singers is barely audible and everyone seems okay with that. There is some raunchy humor that kind of works, but seems not that appropriate for a movie that seems targeted at tween aged girls. Because it is based on a competition you want to see them get better and see how it turns out. Other than that the only thing of interest is the song arrangements, which are solid for the most part. So it wasn’t horrible watching it. People who sing, watch American Idol, and most young women are going to appreciate this movie more than I did, but it gets a C+ from me.
