Enough Said 2013

B-

I remember hearing some good reviews on this indie movie, maybe in the waning days of At the Movies, but never saw it. At the time I hadn’t ever seen The Sopranos so I wasn’t that familiar with James Gandolfini. However, now I am into season 5 of that series and it is fun to see him in such a different character and losing the New Jersey accent. I was lucky to pick this up at Dollar Tree on Blu-ray. Of course I had seen Julia Louise Dreyfuss on Seinfeld but not much of her on her newer shows.

Not funny enough to be a romantic comedy, the movie centers around a budding romance between the two main stars, both divorced and trying not to make the same mistakes. It’s a nice story up until the second act when Dreyfuss does something that lost me and never works her way out of it. It became like a non-funny episode of The Larry David Show with all of the flawed angry people reacting to a situation that would have been easy for normal people to avoid. In the meantime it explores relationships, especially failed ones, and middle age in an otherwise pretty realistic way. The two leads do a good job with their material and have a good supporting cast, but the central issue took me out of really caring for Dreyfuss’ character, making the movie a lot less enjoyable.
