Gravity 2013
I was glad to get a chance to catch this one in 3D at the theaters before it is gone. I had heard a lot about it, and unfortunately knew some of the major plot points, but this is more of a visual spectacular, though it also takes a cue from the big disaster movies of the 70’s. While those movies would have different stories taking place, this entire movie has very few characters and no b-story. As such, it is kind of short, but there is very little padding. Not even much character development or even a plot. Sandra Bullock does a great job as the sort of everday Joe thrown into this horrible space disaster. It is a great concept, mostly in weightlessness, and most of that in the empty vacuum of space, accurately portrayed without sound. You can quibble a little over some of the science, but it is better to just sit there and be entertained and awed.
Update in 2018: I bought the Blu-ray of this movie eventually and watched it again. Even without 3D, this movie really works for me. The extras on the Blu-ray are very good showing some of the key methods they used to film the movie in space and in weightlessness, along with some of the usual stuff about the performers.
