The Heat 2013
I caught the end of this movie on TV once and it seemed surprisingly good. When the blu-ray went on a really good sale, I went ahead and bought it. Critics were not crazy about the movie, but sometimes comedies don’t fare well with critics while audiences are willing to stick with it for a few laughs. It is basically a female buddy cop movie where a tightly buttoned FBI special agent (Sandra Bullock) is partnered with a raunchy slob of a local cop (Melissa McCarthy). Both are good detectives, so it is fun watching them figure things out in a series of smaller busts. McCarthy is mostly entertaining as she spews profanity and intimidates everyone around her. Bullock, who is not liked by coworkers for being arrogant, is also a good character, playing the straight man to McCarthy who is trying to get her to loosen up. There is also a decent crime story, though kind of perfunctory so the movie will have a plot. It is a fun movie to watch as you get to know the characters, laugh at the stuff they are doing, while following their investigative skills. There are some good side characters, though they are frequently overplayed and not as funny as they would like. The language is terrible, but otherwise the movie is pretty harmless.
The blu-ray included a digital copy, but otherwise has no extras whatsoever. However, the digital copy on Movies Anywhere has a ton of extras including entirely too many alternate takes as the cast tries out different insults and craziness, plus a very good “making of” segment worth watching and featuring director Paul Feig entirely too well dressed to be a director.
