Frank 2014
I remember when this movie came out that it got pretty good reviews, but I never saw it. Then after a few years, the DVD started showing up at Dollar Tree stores, but I am more of a blu-ray guy. Still, it was something I wanted to watch so eventually I gave in and bought the DVD. Then another year went by and I hadn’t watched it yet, but the blu-ray started showing up at Dollar Tree and I snapped it up! Still not bad getting both for two dollars. This go around I watched it pretty quickly.
The movie is about an aspiring musician who isn’t particularly talented despite really wanting to be successful. By chance he winds up in a dysfunctional band fronted by a guy in a large papier mâché head, which it turns out, he never takes off. But the lead is a musical genius and the young guy looks forward to learning to make music from him. It doesn’t work out that well, so instead of a story about creativity and making great music it gets a little darker. It also ends up feeling a little thrown together, like they had the idea of a guy in a head (which is based on a real guy) but they weren’t able to write a movie any better than the characters could write songs. It is still mostly interesting and a lot of weirdness is pretty funny or at least absurd enough to be enjoyable. But the strongest part is towards the beginning and then it mostly goes downhill. It isn’t at all bad, it just should have been a little better.
