Godzilla 2014
I didn’t know much about this movie at all going in and was surprised by how much my roommate wanted to go see it. And not just see it, but in full IMAX 3D at about $20 per ticket. IMAX was pretty impressive, but as usual I’m not sure 3D adds that much, even when it seems like it would be perfect for this kind of situation. I won’t give away anything in the movie, but I will say Godzilla is very, very large in this movie, so big it is hard for humans to have any kind of interaction with him, which I think takes away from good opportunities for 3D effects.
Overall this was a good movie and the audience clapped at a few points in the movie, so everyone was definitely into it, though it was also the opening weekend. There is a fair amount of exposition to wade through at the beginning and I think they could have put in a little less of that, but there is a lot of explaining to be done about why such a large monster can exist and what makes him tick. A few big name actors are pretty much wasted, but the main attraction doesn’t disappoint. Still, I can’t give a great score to what is still just a pretty typical monster movie, so I’m thinking a B, close to a B+.
