The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
Wes Anderson’s movies started out as just quirky, but as his budgets have grown, he has been able to realize full pieces of art while maintaining that fundamental quirkiness. The Grand Budapest Hotel is a beautiful movie to watch with great sets, costumes, and an amazing cast of mandatory associates and new faces. It is easy to overlook a movie like this as more elaborate doodlings from the kid in the back of the classroom, and it has a very Napolean Dynamite vibe including a guy that looks like Pedro and a girl that looks like Napolean’s girlfriend, but this is actually great storytelling with very rich production values. It’s all kind of silly, but it is fun to watch and a great visual experience. The story is quite good: a flashback of a flashback, with murder, intrigue, chases, prison escapes, and shootouts, as the world transitions into a temporary period of evil that will change everything.
