Mad Max: Fury Road 2015

B+

It has been 30 years since the last Max Max movie came out. It is pretty amazing that other than getting rid of Mel Gibson, the same director was able to put together another episode that feels so similar to those others. Like a lot of action movies lately, there isn’t a lot of set up or character development, they just dive right into the action and then find new ways of pushing the accelerator harder througout the movie, like spitting octane right into the air intake.

Underneath all of that action there is a pretty good story, with a lot left unexplained, giving the movie a little more depth than it would have otherwise. It sounds like they are planning a number of sequels, so there will be time to explain and add even more later on. So what you have is mostly just a giant car chase action sequence through the desert. It is amazing and put together well, but it is just a LOT of car chase. It surprises me that it has gotten so much critical acclaim. Maybe because Max kind of takes a backseat to Charlize Theron’s character, Furiosa. If so, maybe it’s just reverse sexism. It is still a good movie, even if there isn’t necessarily a lot of substance to it. I’ll give a B+, which may be a little generous.
