Sponge Out of Water 2015
I had no intention of ever seeing a SpongeBob SquarePants movie, certainly not a sequel, but a blu-ray for the movie showed up Dollar Tree and it got a Metacritic rating over 60, which is my cutoff for blind buys, so I shelled out my $1.25 and got the Mexican print of this movie (BobEsponja: Un Heroe Fuera del Agua) which still has an option for English menus and soundtrack.
There was a time when SpongeBob was so subversive that parents worried about their children watching the show. I tried watching it and it just seemed incredibly dumb. That was maybe twenty years ago. Watching this movie, there was a sense of humor at work, plus with a bigger budget, there was Antonio Banderas as a pirate. The rest of the voice cast are the regulars, who aren’t famous (except for some interchangeable sea gulls who have minor parts, but big names). I did chuckle a few times, but mostly the movie is just kind of dumb and drags quite a bit. I stopped watching about halfway through and coming back to it, it was even worse. I powered through to the end and it got at least a little more exciting, but still wasn’t that funny or even that inventive as the crew is turned into CGI superheroes for a final battle. It isn’t terrible to watch, just not at all good. But I did laugh at some of it so I can still give it a C.
