Central Intelligence 2016

B+

I happened to turn on the TV while this movie was just starting and I didn’t want to stop watching. This is not a great movie and got fairly bad reviews, but the two leads, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, are both pretty funny. Johnson plays off and on type, a horribly dorky high school kid who becomes a very proficient CIA field agent that looks like The Rock, but he’s still kind of dorky. The spy drama involves Johnson (possibly a good guy, possibly a rogue agent) who enlists the help of Kevin Hart, a mild mannered accountant having a mid-life crisis. It’s mostly what you would expect, but the jokes and action keep it moving pretty well, reminding me of 2015’s Spy. There are a lot of pop culture references, in particular to the Molly Ringwald movie Sixteen Candles, which is one of my favorites, so that kind of thing worked for me. Dwayne Johnson is fun to watch as he goes from being dorky to badass and back over and over again. It is hard to find a good comedy, but I felt like this one delivers.
