Deadpool 2016

B

While I feel kind of overloaded on Marvel movies lately, Deadpool offers a different approach with a less heroic hero, more violence, bad language, and an irreverant sense of humor towards Marvel movies that starts with the opening credits. The movie is well made, jumping into a big action sequence and then filling in the details of how everyone got there later on, including how the wisecracking Deadpool came to exist. Sadly, he is a mutant of the X-men variety, so just another take on the same thing. Ryan Reynolds is funny in this role, frequently breaking the fourth wall and admitting it, and his girlfriend is played by Morena Baccarin, one of the most beautiful women ever, so there are some great elements. But even as they poke fun at having CGI characters and self-indulgent cameos, those elements are still there. Just like always. And the main villain is another mutant who also can’t seem to be damaged permanently, so they fight and slam each other into walls and metal things endlessly, well, until the end. If this movie had been made five or ten years ago it would have been amazing, but the X men never did anything for me: too many people with too many superpowers. This is a fun R-rated graphically violent movie, but it also suffers from superhero fatigue even while it tries to be an antihero movie.
