Hail, Caesar! 2016
I remember seeing the previews for this movie and wondering what it could possibly be about. After watching it, I don’t know that a preview could really do the movie justice. The setting is a Hollywood movie studio around 1950. There isn’t much of a plot, just a series of scenes tied together by a couple of the main characters. It feels a little like a Wes Anderson movie where odd things happen to a collection of odd characters for no apparent reason. Even though it doesn’t hold together, it is fun to watch, whether it is cameos by big actors, elaborate but silly production numbers, or George Clooney’s kidnapping. Even though it is fiction, it gives some insight into what behind-the-scenes Hollywood might have been like during that time period. I kind of wished for more of the Coen Brothers regulars to show up and I was kind of surprised when it was over. It’s not really much of a movie, but it is worth watching for all of the different pieces.
