Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 2016
I had heard about this movie, but never watched it, maybe due to lackluster reviews. However, it seemed interesting and Disney Plus was showing it in 4k, plus I was procrastinating watching The Grapes of Wrath, so I watched it. It is a very cool looking movie (by Tim Burton) with some neat concepts about people (mostly children) with special powers taking place in present day and in 1940’s Wales. There is some time travel which gets writers into trouble, and some of the powers are pretty weird, downright macabre. Then some other stuff happens that is particularly gruesome and scary (for example, zombie-like people gather and snack on children’s eyeballs) and I had to wonder why anyone would make a PG-13 horror movie for children that seems like it may have barely missed an R rating. I was surprised how much time it took for the movie to get going and once it did it seemed like maybe it wrapped things up a little too quickly and neatly. I definitely feel like it has a lot of flaws. If you like horror movies and macabre Tim Burton style costumes and set design, you could really like it. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone under 15 or 16 unless they've already seen R rated horror movies. I liked some aspects of the movie, but I don’t feel like it really came together and told the story as well as it needed to.
