The Edge of Seventeen 2016

C-

I had heard some good things about this movie and decided to watch my recording of it before my Comcast contract ends in a couple of weeks. Out of maybe a hundred recorded movies, for some reason I felt this was one I wanted to see. The movie is about a girl in high school who is kind of a social outcast, but largely her own choosing since she hates pretty much everything. When her popular older brother starts going out with her one best friend she is kind of all alone, but starts flirting with some boys. Basically she is selfish and mean for most of the movie and then she realizes that she can be happier if she isn’t that way. This movie was hard for me to sit and watch and I came back to it a number of times before finally finishing it so I could move on to some other movies. It feels genuine in the sense that there are probably a lot of girls in high school who disdain everything, but also want to be accepted, but that doesn’t seem like much of a statement and her transition in the very waning minutes of the movie seemed like it was put off for too long. Woody Harrelson has a great small part as a teacher that she enjoys tormenting, but the movie is weighed down by its brat of a main character.
