Trolls 2016

I heard Trolls was not that good, so I never saw it at the theaters. However, when it was released to home video, I took advantage of an offer where I was able to get the Blu-ray for free. After having it on the shelf for a few months, I finally got around to watching it. And, yes, it isn’t that good. The story is pretty bad and very predicatable. Some of the music, brought to life from the 70s and 80s, is fun though and the big song at the end has a lot of energy, made more memorable by Justin Timberlake’s performance opening the Oscars in 2017. The animation is clumsy at times, with the bad guys being fat with very short limbs that prevent them from moving realistically. And some of the themes are quite dark since the bad guys eat trolls like candy. At one point all of the trolls are imprisoned with an impending trollocaust that makes things pretty bleak, though we get a clue how they will get out pretty quickly. The colors are bright, the felt textures of everything is an interesting touch, and some of the voice work is good, but there just isn’t much going on and the movie drags quite a bit. I got my money’s worth, but I don’t think most would.
