John Wick: Chapter 2 2017

B-

This movie has gotten surprisingly good reviews. Since I hadn’t watch the first, I rented it beforehand and was impressed though it was kind of like a 2-hour drum solo, no significant plot and just tons of shootouts. In the sequel, they have more of a plot and we find out there are more rules to this whole gangster hit man thing, which pull John Wick back into the business he is trying so hard to leave. There are still tons of shoot-outs in this movie with another huge body count (never accept a job as henchman, so not worth it). But the shoot-outs aren’t that new and the plot is kind of so-so. Then they ruin the movie by setting up future installments to the point where this feels like one of those horrible movies like Pirates of the Caribbean or Back to the Future where they filmed two sequels at once. My prediction is the next John Wick movie will have him move to Atlanta or at least Georgia where tax incentives can make almost any movie profitable. Seeing the surprisingly good original just the day before probably raised my expectations for the second movie, setting myself up for disappointment. The movie still has its charms and the action scenes are probably as good or better than the original, but it sags a little when they try to have a plot, like after that amazing drum solo of the first movie, the rest of the band joins in and it’s Toto.
