Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2019

B-

Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie is getting some pretty solid reviews. I figured I would see it eventually, so I may as well see it now. The movie is mostly about Leonardo DiCaprio’s fictional fading TV Western star and his stunt double and hired assistant, played by Brad Pitt. Both of them get a number of loosely connected scenes, but there isn’t much of a narrative here despite the movie being almost three hours long. Woven into their scenes is the Manson family and the fateful events at Roman Polanski’s house, which happens to be next door to DiCaprio’s character’s home. And that is really the whole movie. There isn’t a lot of sharp dialogue, not a whole lot of tension for a Tarantino movie, but there are a lot of neat things that happen and all kinds of stars show up. It is mostly fun to watch, but also kind of depressing since DiCaprio’s character is a depressed drunk and while Pitt’s character is pretty impressive, he doesn’t have much of a future either. This is not Tarantino’s best work, and could be some of his worst work, but that still doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to like.
