Jungle Cruise 2021

B-

Jungle Cruise always seemed like a pretty lame amusement park ride, even when I was a little kid and going to Disneyworld for the first time. Disney relied too much on fake animals and cute scenes that were kind of funny if you thought about them, but not much to really see. In the buildup to the release of this movie, Disney Plus has released videos about the iconic ride and about how it morphed into a way to deliver really lame jokes at the hands of the skippers, though I do like the one about Schweitzer Falls being named after the famous explorer Dr. Albert Falls. So some of those jokes find their way into the movie with Dwayne Johnson as our skipper. He and Emily Blunt both do a great job and have plenty of chemistry and charisma, which is about all that saves this otherwise incredibly formulaic movie. There are magical potions and curses, and an evil German submarine captain, plus undead Spanish conquistadors, animal sidekicks, plucky townspeople, and so on. It just feels stuffed with a lot of pieces of other movies without presenting much that is original. As the plot comes to a head and magic starts happening, I had mostly lost interest. It isn’t that it isn’t mostly entertaining to watch, I just wish it had been better.
