The Matrix Resurrections 2021
I really enjoyed the original The Matrix in 1999 (only gave it a B+ though) but was disappointed with sequels in general (B and B). The first movie had a lot going for it, not just the action and cool looks, which are easy to replicate, but the mystery of how the world isn’t quite what we think and why. Once that mystery is revealed (mostly), action and cool looks aren’t going to save any future movies, including this one. There is some nostalgia for the original movie available, and they show flashbacks to the original, which is neat. Not everyone shows up in the same way, but Neo and Trinity are back, while Mr. Smith and Morpheus are now played by someone else. There are still some neat things to explore in this movie, but for the most part it is a lot of the same kind of thing. If you are a fan of the series, you pretty much have to see this. I didn’t think the action scenes are as good, with the camera often in too close to see what is happening. Still, I enjoyed revisiting this world and the characters as well as the nostalgia and the updates, but it has a lot of flaws, so I can only give it a high B.
