The Worst Person in the World 2021

B

This Swedish film set in Norway has gotten some very good reviews for the lead actress, script, and the film itself. It is considered the third part of director Joachim Trier’s “Oslo trilogy,” (I have not seen the other two) but I don’t think they share a storyline. The movie centers on a 29-year old woman who hasn’t really decided what she wants to do in life, tries different fields of study and has a few relationships. And that is the whole movie, mostly about the relationships. It feels very much like a book where the author is basically writing about their own life. And while everyone’s life is interesting on some level, this movie and this life don’t seem that out of the ordinary. She isn’t the worst person in the world: that line is mentioned by a boyfriend saying if he did something it would make him the worst person in the world (though it wouldn’t really even make him that unusual). I feel like women might enjoy this movie more than men since they may be able to identify with the main character and her dilemmas more, but I don’t think there would be any deep reasonance since the movie doesn’t go all that deep. One character professes she is wonderful person, but there is nothing in the movie to confirm that either. The movie starts out pretty quickly, but as it becomes clear that nothing much is going to happen, it starts feeling very slow. I looked at my watch, dismayed to see there were still forty minutes to go. I feel like it is still well made and a decent slice of life movie, but also easily skipped.
