Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 2022

B

Today I got a Dr. Strange poster in the mail and looking at it I thought who is this teenaged girl in the jean jacket? It turns out she is the plot. I think it is best to be as unspoiled as possible for this movie because there are a lot of crazy surprises. This movie is jam packed with all kinds of stuff, a lot of which is so mysterious that anything can happen. Witchcraft, sorcery, and the multiverse all allow pretty much anything to happen. I thought the plot would relate directly to the end of the most recent Spider-Man movie and/or the Loki series on Disney+ which both concerned the multiverse, but this is just a different breach of the multiverse. You don’t even need to have watched Wandavision since the few elements in play from that are explained pretty easily.

I don’t like the primary conflict: It’s that classic trope of blaming superheroes for the damage that happened while they were saving humanity. Also, the movie isn’t that funny, but has a few decent jokes, plus fan service surprises. Because it is all about magic and witchcraft, there is no making sense of any of it, so you just watch and accept everything that happens. I took a gamble by seeing it in 3D and I thought it was a reasonable upgrade though I feel like you get used to the effect despite good use of it right off the bat. The actors are good and despite the crazy world being presented, it seems easy enough to understand. I had heard there are a lot of horror elements and it definitely has some callouts to classic horror movies, but not as gory or as frightening as modern horror. In the end, I just don’t like the multiverse: it is too easy, too big, and too confusing. I'd like more focus on characters and ideas, but I think the multiverse is here to stay for a while unfortunately. This is an enjoyable movie, but the story is a little disappointing.
