The Holdovers 2023

B+

This movie got good reviews and eventually a Best Picture nomination, but I didn't rush out to see it at the theaters (I don't think it was there long anyway). I was able to cactch it on Hulu, but it took a couple of sittings to get through it. It is a good movie and Paul Giamatti is very good in his role as a curmudgeonly prep school history teacher. However, the movie is a little slow. Not painfully so, but it takes its time for sure. It also feels very familiar with the setting at a small prep school. I hoped it would break out of that, but ultimately it doesn't. It is still a good story, with strong characters, and fine performances. Giamatti's character just isn't likeable, even as he inevitably humanizes somewhat. He definitely makes an impression and the humor and humanity does win you over, though you probably still don't want to hang out with him (or be in a theater or restaurant with him). This is a solid movie, but also a little forgettable.
