Polite Society 2023
I had not heard of this movie, but I got free tickets through Focus Features' Insider program. It is a British movie about two sisters in a family of Pakistani descent. The older sister gets engaged and the younger sister thinks she has sold out, and wants to stop the wedding even if she has to use her not particularly great martial arts skills. It is mostly light and funny with some decent fight scenes and a little insight into British Muslim culture. There are good characters, some funny parts, and while the plot is thin, it is strong enough. It isn't just a martial arts movie and it isn't as crazy as something like Everything Everywhere All at Once or Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but it has some of that flavor. Because it draws on a lot of different genres and throws in some unique perspective, it is easy to like just for being different and interesting. Critics like the movie, but aren't raving about it, which seems about right. For me it gets a low A-.
