Conclave 2024

B+

This movie has gotten some attention as an early Oscar contender. It is an interesting premise, covering the election of a new pope. Ralph Fiennes is very good as an administrative cardinal tasked with running the conclave where cardinals from all over the world come together to elect the new pope. They do a good job of showing some of the different factions: liberal, conservative, and power hungry. Fiennes' character leans liberal, but ends up finding out some disqualifying information on some of the candidates. Stanley Tucci is good as a close confidant and leading liberal candidate. John Lithgow is another candidate. There are a few others that develop, focusing the movie mostly on these characters and some of the palace intrigue that goes on. It is a great looking movie and the acting is good. The writing is decent too, but the movie is a little slow and I wasn't crazy about the ending, which I won't discuss other than a mild spoiler below.
