Sinners 2025
I didn't see this when it hit theaters because I didn't feel like it was going to be something I would like, but after it became a hugely acclaimed hit, I did buy it on 4k blu-ray back in November. I held off finishing my 2025 year in review for this movie (and still haven't seen One Battle After Another) and it has taken me half of 2026 to finally watch it. It isn't something I would like.
Generally I don't like horror movies including zombie movies, vampires, anything supernatural and violent really. And that is very much what the second half of this movie is. However, director and writer Ryan Coogler starts with a gangster plot about two brothers coming back from the Chicago criminal underworld to start a juke joint in Clarksdale, Mississippi in the 1930s, plus some full length songs, and then some stuff about the Klan. It is a lot to try to mix together and I feel like none of the component pieces are really that great, but the story of the brothers had some promise until the second half when everyone's stories are pushed aside. Then some other stuff is tacked on to the end that probably didn't need to be there. I feel like Coogler had a lot of ideas and wanted to tell all of it in one movie, but the stories trip over themselves with the story I liked the least taking over.
