Alice in Wonderland 1951

B

I thought I had seen this movie somewhat recently, but it must have been a very long time ago because parts of it seemed pretty new to me. I saw the 2010 live action version when it came out and my main complaint was the lack of any sort of plot or character development. The same thing applies to any film version of Alice since that is true of the original story. It is a walk through a gallery of imagination and has no more plot than a visit to a zoo or a museum. That’s a big setback and now animation, songs, and odd characters have to carry the movie. They do that to a large degree. The Mad Hatter is one of the greatest animated characters ever. But the hookah-smoking caterpillar? Very frustrating. The animation is still good, especially the scenes with all of the cards running around. There are also a lot of very different characters, but I was ready for it to end pretty early on. It is a neat movie and everyone should see it at some point (and read the books too), but I still found it a little lacking.
