Carrie 1976
I never saw this iconic horror film, though of course I have seen some of the scenes from the climactic prom scene. The blu-ray showed up at Dollar Tree and although I don’t usually like horror movies, I figured this one is such a classic that I should get it. I watched it on Halloween. I have to admit, the movie is disappointing. Really it is just a buildup to that one scene and takes its sweet time getting there. Do we need to watch her tormenters punished by doing afterschool exercise? The setup is sad but simple as Carrie explores her mental powers and is mistreated by her mother and some classmates. The trick played on her is simple too, a bucket of blood that splashes on her until the next camera shot when she is now covered from head to toe in it. There is a jump scene at the very end that is effective even though I had been told about it, but otherwise the movie isn’t that scary as much as sad and sometimes violent. I am not a fan of horror and this movie just didn’t work for me. It is 44 years old, so maybe it is hard to expect much, but I hoped for more based on the reputation, cast, the source by Stephen King, and Brian de Palma directing.
As much of a classic as this movie is, the 2014 blu-ray I bought had no extras other than a theatrical trailer.
