The Little Mermaid 1989

B+

I never got around to seeing The Little Mermaid. However when I came up with a ranking of Disney’s movies, it came in at number 3 overall, just behind Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast so I wound up buying the Blu-ray. The movie itself is significant because it was the beginning of a series of very good movies from Disney in the 1990’s. The story, adapted from Hans Christian Andersen, but thankfully changed significantly, is good, with strong characters, a creepy villain, and some good side characters. It also has some very good songs and animation, much of it underwater. It’s still a princess story, so it is very girly, but the battle between good and evil would appeal to anyone. I’m not sure it warrants a top three position, but I can see how it would be a classic movie for kids. My main problem with the movie is Ariel, who makes dumb and selfish choices that put others in danger despite her father’s warnings.
